We’re turning a former dumping ground into a thriving ecosystem
The sun is rising over the pine trees, and the dew of my October yard is evaporating into the spreading sun.
The jays and finches are having deep convos, while I sink into the peace of my family running errands without me.
I’m sitting in the backyard at my outdoor office — a 30-year-old picnic table, and my laptop. Not aesthetic. Or comfortable.
But there’s something about working with bare feet in the grass that I find more life-giving than my ergonomically correct desk chair.
In a sharp contrast to this deliciously peaceful morning, I note I’m sitting at the spot where the previous “caretakers” of this land decided to burn a pile of garbage… in the middle of our house showing —
A stark reminder of the day we met our now home…
Our realtor led us past a one-eyed doll head wedged in a tree to view the acre-large yard.
As we rounded the corner, we were met with two suspicious characters throwing trash onto a blazing fire.
They weren’t the owners of the home, who had locked themselves inside a bedroom upstairs. They were “paid help,” they told us.
It was unlike any house showing we’d ever attended.
It was love at first cringe.
